Unveiled during Melbourne Design Week, Artificial Futures inspires visitors to imagine the future through a display of AI-generated images that encompass contributors' collective hopes and dreams. Drawing inspiration from the intersection of art, design, and technology and weaving a narrative that reflects our collective responsibility for navigating the complexities of the future, whether desirable or undesirable.
With an ardent embrace of the theme "Design the world you want," our website serves as a thought-provoking mirror and offers a space for contemplation and inspiration.
Users respond to simple prompts, creating distinct AI-generated images that represent the future they designed, the images a reflection of the sentiment of the prompts—dark images to visualise scepticism and vibrant, colourful images for joyful prompts.
Taking inspiration from history, descriptive samples of Italian Futurism’s art, sculpture, and photography are used as a layer of information. Combined with the user’s prompts, images are generated and added to the gallery. The result is a catalogue of individually unique images that share visual tropes.
The project sparks conversations about AI's evolving role in design and creativity. It attempts to redefine visual art’s boundaries and accelerate the birth of new ideas. It invites audiences to explore AI's potential as a transformative tool for creating diverse, impactful, and original visual content.
By echoing the Italian Futurist art movement, it subtly reminds us of a time when artists and architects designed the futures they anticipated or dreamed of.
