The National Communication Museum is a contemporary space dedicated to showcasing the evolution of communication technologies and their profound impact on Australian communities. It offers an immersive experience that explores the dynamic role of communication in shaping our future, sometimes best achieved by looking at the past.
We were asked to create a temporary website in anticipation of the museum’s opening. The building was under construction, the exhibitions were still in development, and there were limited visual assets to lean on. Turning constraints into creative opportunities, we needed to create something special that offered a preview of the museum's interactive exhibits and evoked excitement for an experience that didn’t exist yet.
Inspired by NCM’s spotlight on understanding communication technology’s impact on society, we created an interactive sound experience that encourages users to think about communication differently. Much like the museum's mission to highlight the role of communication technologies in our lives, the Sound Toy immerses users in a dynamic, generative audio and visual experience, evolving based on the sounds it ‘hears’, and creating an unscripted and playful experience that reflects the museum’s dedication to interactive, hands-on learning.
More than a digital feature, the Sound Toy was a taste of what was to come, a nibble from the promise of an engaging and immersive approach to learning about communication. It brought the essence of NCM to the forefront, capturing the curiosity and creativity at the heart of communication’s evolution.
